Les laboratoires Pfizer et BioNTech ont annoncé qu’ils demanderaient une autorisation réglementaire pour une troisième dose de leur vaccin contre le Covid-19.
Les deux sociétés, dont le vaccin s’est vendu sous le nom « Comirnaty » ont développé un rappel destiné à cibler la variante delta alors que des inquiétudes grandissent concernant cette souche hautement transmissible.
Les sociétés ont déclaré conjointement, qu’une troisième dose du vaccin à ARNm avait le potentiel de préserver les plus hauts niveaux d’efficacité protectrice contre toutes les variantes actuellement connues, y compris le fameux Delta.
Néanmoins, les principales agences fédérales américaines (la Food and Drug Administration et les Centers for Disease and Control) ont estimé que les Américains n’avaient pas encore besoin de cette troisième dose et qu’il n’appartenait pas aux seules entreprises de décider quand cette dose supplémentaire pourrait être nécessaire.
Les responsables du gouvernement américain ont souligné que les personnes complètement vaccinées ont un faible risque d’infection, même à partir de la variante Delta ou B.1.617.2, qui est plus transmissible que les lignées antérieures du virus.
De leurs cotés, Pfizer et son partenaire BioNTech ont déclaré que les preuves démontraient des niveaux d’anticorps cinq à dix fois supérieurs à ceux du coronavirus d’origine et de la variante bêta trouvées pour la première fois en Afrique du Sud.
« Pfizer et BioNTech ont vu des données encourageantes dans l’essai de rappel en cours d’une troisième dose du vaccin BNT162b2 actuel. Les données initiales de l’étude démontrent qu’une dose de rappel administrée 6 mois après la deuxième dose a un profil de tolérabilité cohérent tout en provoquant des titres de neutralisation sont 5 à 10 fois plus élevés qu’après deux doses primaires », indique le communiqué.
Les laboratoires ont également déclaré que les preuves montaient que l’immunité des personnes commençait à décliner après avoir été vaccinées.
