Cet Américain originaire de Milwaukee, ville du Wisconsin située au nord de Chicago, a été condamné en février 1992 à 17 peines de prison à perpétuité équivalentes au nombre de victimes qu’il a faites entre 1978 et 1991. Sa folie meurtrière et son penchant pour l’alcool ont débuté alors qu’il n’avait que 18 ans : livré à lui-même après le départ inopiné de sa mère et l’absence inexpliquée de son père, il ramène un auto-stoppeur à son domicile et le tue à l’aide d’un haltère. Par la suite, il reproduit le même mode opératoire : il séduit de jeunes hommes homosexuels dans des bars, les ramène chez lui, les drogués avec des somnifères et les tue dans leur sommeil. Fasciné par la dissection d’animaux morts et la taxidermie depuis son plus jeune âge, il développe une attraction morbide pour le sang et la chair qu’il assouvit à travers ses pulsions criminelles. Après avoir tué, il démembre chaque corps, conserve des ossements, se prête au cannibalisme et dissout le reste dans un tonneau d’acide chlorhydrique.
Cette mini-série Monstre : l’Histoire de Jeffrey Dahmer a attiré plus de 196 millions de spectateurs en l’espace d’une semaine, réalisant ainsi le meilleur démarrage de la plateforme de streaming depuis la saison 4 de Stranger Things.
En tenant compte de la nouvelle méthode de mesure d’audience, la série devient le cinquième plus gros succès de la plateforme derrière Squid Game, All of Us Are Dead, Stranger Things (saison 4) et Bridgerton (saison 2).
